This sort of system is so attractive because it is fairly cheap and easy to manage. There is no product involved for the affiliated businessman. It is not as easy as it first appears, however. It takes a committed effort if you want to develop a reliable income stream.

Make sure that your partners don't take advantage of cookies, and certainly don't do it yourself. At best, this is irritating to the visitor. You could possibly spread viruses or break the customer tracking chains.

Always disclose when you are using affiliate marketing and see how it affects your readers and visitors in a positive manner. Transparency is always appreciated, particularly in the field of affiliate marketing. If your readers understand the reasons you utilize affiliate marketing, they may be more positive and responsive to the links provided on your site.

Selecting an affiliate products company with several payment options should be high on your list, especially if you need a quick turn-around for your earnings. There are affiliate companies that only offer payment once you have reached a particular dollar amount, while others will direct pay you through a checking account or other online payment services.

As a time saving tip for affiliates who are dealing with many emails with instructions that need to be addressed, don't waste time continuing to go back to the emails to reread the message. Save time and be productive put them into a word document. By using the document as your reference, you can work more quickly and efficiently.

When visitors come to your sports-focused website, they are expecting information about sports. Providing affiliate links may prove to be unfruitful if the links are forwarding visitors to websites that do not pertain to sports. If your link is close to the website topic, your visitors are going to be more interested in it.

Paid advertising, such as Google Ads, is a good way to make money from affiliate marketing programs. Use targeted keywords in your ads to attract customers to your site.

When selecting prospective affiliates, do so with purpose and with a clear idea of who your target audience is. This allows you to drive traffic and connect with your target market through a sense of shared understanding.

Choose affiliate companies that are supportive and help their affiliates by sharing resources that can help sell their products. Generally, affiliate businesses are not stupid. They do research to learn what marketing techniques convert customers. Successful companies share their information with affiliates in an effort to create customized marketing campaigns to sell products.

If you employ banner ads try to put a question on it, some people will click and not be able to refuse clicking. Most people will be unable to leave without clicking on the banner. Reward the visitors by presenting discounts to those that answered the question correctly.

When you are reviewing a product, spice up your opinions with movies, pictures, and whatever else you can think of that will really make that product look good to others. You will be able to bring in more income with affiliate marketing if you go this route. These will help people see how great the product is and convince them to buy one. Be very precise and specific in your reviews. Buyers want to know everything there is to know about something before they buy it.

Knowing real time statistics is incredibly important. These will help you to track how much traffic your site is getting, and exactly how many of your products have been purchased.

A crucial element of affiliate marketing is obtaining as many backlinks as you can, but it can backfire on you if your visitors feel deceived by inappropriate content. A visitor will not be happy if the link they clicked on did not take them to the destination that he or she thought it would. This will speak of dishonesty to your visitors, no matter how well the strategy is planned.

You should not conclude that 100% commissions are a program scam. Take the time to read through it and you may find that there is no scam to it. There are legitimate companies that offer such programs. While you enjoy the 100 percent commission, the company makes money on subscriptions that follow the original purchase. This can greatly benefit you, so pay close attention to an offer similar to this.

You need to make sure that you remain relevant if you wish to find success with affiliate marketing. Keep up with your affiliates and what sort of promotions they may be offering. Check out the constantly evolving tools that will draw customers into your affiliate marketing goals.

Be upfront and disclose that you do make money when your readers buy from your affiliate link. Visitors to your site are likely savvy consumers; resist the temptation to cover up the nature of affiliate links. Early honesty will improve your chances of increasing repeat visits and affiliate customers.

Always try to push your goals further. One day you could turn this into a real profit opportunity. Keep on pressing forward, never let up on working hard, and you will see your profits continue to grow. It can be hard to get started but if you keep at it you can succeed.

Tony Hall's letter to Maria Miller on sexism in sports coverage - full text

Dear Maria,

Thank you for your letter of 16 July, regarding the comments made by John Inverdale on Radio 5 live earlier this month during the Wimbledon championships.

I agree that the comments made by John during the build-up to the Women's Final were totally unacceptable and fell well beneath the standards we expect of our presenters.

John sincerely regrets that he made such an inappropriate statement and for the offence caused. As he said on-air the following day, he has written to Marion Bartoli to apologise and the BBC has also apologised for John's remarks.

In addition, the director of sport and the controller of 5 live have both spoken to John to make it clear that his comments were unacceptable and that an incident of this nature must never happen again.

The BBC has a proud record of supporting women's sport, as I am sure you will have recognised from the current coverage of Euro 2013. We are building on the fantastic success of the Olympics, with a team including many women broadcasters, through extensive day-in-day-out coverage across our TV, radio and online services. With the tennis at Eastbourne (and, of course, Laura Robson's inspiring efforts at Wimbledon), the Women's British Open Golf Championship, as well as the Anniversary Games and the World Athletics Championships - when many of the world's top female athletes will be in action ? there is unprecedented coverage of women's sport across the BBC this summer. This follows on from coverage of netball, Women's Super League and World Cup cricket. We have also appointed an Editorial Lead specifically for women's sport, which has helped to ensure significantly increased coverage across our daily sporting output, such as on 5 Live, the News channel and Breakfast TV, as well as online. I would be happy to make sure you are kept updated as we enhance our editorial ambition for women's sport.

I can also tell you, following our Respect at Work review, that we are taking another look at the BBC's equality and diversity policies, which apply to all our staff. Whilst the review found no evidence of sexual harassment in the BBC now, one outcome has been for us to be much clearer when we communicate to those who work for us what constitutes inappropriate behaviour or language and to reaffirm the BBC's values around respect. Our equality and diversity online training also provides clear guidance on general standards of behaviour by all those we employ, as well as emphasising the importance of treating people with respect.

Whilst of course the editorial judgments about what happens on air are a matter which is distinct from issues within the workplace, I hope you will appreciate that this is a matter I take very seriously across the BBC.

Best wishes,

Tony Hall

Nano drug crosses blood-brain tumor barrier, targets brain-tumor cells and blood vessels

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The blood-brain barrier protects the brain from poisons but also prevents drugs from reaching brain tumors. A preclinical study shows that an experimental nanotechnology drug called SapC-DOPS crosses the tumor blood-brain barrier, targets brain-tumor cells and retards growth of tumor blood vessels. The findings also show why the agent targets tumor cells and recommend the drug's further development as a novel treatment for glioblastoma.

South Africa butterfly hunters: A rare breed

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? Mark Williams was out with his butterfly net in his favorite South African mountain range when a flutter of gray-blue wings sailed by. They were almost as small and nondescript as the other gray-blue butterflies drifting past.

Almost.

Heart pounding and net flailing, he dashed after the bobbing sliver of color, hope fluttering like a wind-blown flag. He hooked in the tiny creature, its wingspan just over 11/2 inches. It was a Lotana blue, believed to be extinct. Nobody had seen one alive in decades.

"I ran it down and caught it with a huge ? swipe, because they can move," Williams said of that moment five years ago. "I knew straight away I'd rediscovered the Lotana blue."

His search for the Lotana blue had taken eight years. Yet a lepidopterist's life ? the childhood bedroom stuffed with bird's nests, pebbles and butterflies, the years of research, the wild goose chases ? can be distilled into such wild, joyful moments.

Dashing through the scrub, net aloft, is a passion that has not changed much over the decades ? except that like certain butterfly species, the South African lepidopterist population has dwindled to a few dozen fiercely competitive fanatics, most of them middle-aged men.

And the 63-year-old Williams, a man who has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his trusty net, confronting angry baboons, dodging bull hippos and narrowly avoiding snake bites, is one of their gods.

"I'm being called the Butterfly Whisperer," Williams said with a smile, carefully moving the remains of rare and common species from one pinboard to another. "I'd love to go out with that title. Mark Williams, the Butterfly Whisperer," he said, rolling the words as if savoring wine.

When Williams first announced his 2009 find, fellow collectors found it hard to believe until he published photographs online. Since then, Williams, who earns a living as a veterinary pathologist, has netted two other species not seen in decades: the Juanita's hairtail last year, and the Waterberg copper in March.

The Waterberg copper was so intensely sought that the Lepidopterists' Society of Africa distributed "wanted" posters with pictures of the insect, and offered a reward of about $1,000.

Searching for the copper, Williams used Google Earth to pinpoint an isolated plateau in South Africa's Limpopo province at the same elevation as the butterfly's former habitat, but 25 miles east. He took a weekend off and forged along a bush track, trailed by his wife.

As soon as he saw the orange flutter of wings, he laughed, not so much at the joy of finding it, but at the irony that he, as the founder of the society, would be collecting the reward. He plans to invest it in future butterfly searches.

***

Although Williams is gregarious and talkative, he's happy staring at Google Earth on a computer screen, shifting locations, sifting for possible sites. He will spend hours looking up rainfall data for various locations (to help him get the timing of his expeditions right) and analyzing vegetation cover (to find the plants the caterpillars eat).

Mostly, though, he has an edge because of the knowledge gained in more than half a century of tracking the insects in this land rich with butterfly species ? about 650 of them.

Since Williams founded the Lepidopterists' Society in 1983, the hunt for endangered species has grown more urgent, with habitat loss and climate change threatening some species, particularly those that have retreated to the tops of mountains, looking for cooler air, and may soon run out of altitude if the highest peaks become too warm for them.

At the end of this year, Williams will launch a quest to rediscover the Bashee River buff ? the holy grail for South African butterfly experts. If the buttery-winged creature still exists, it's most likely to be found on the densely forested banks of the Mbashe River, in the wilds of Eastern Cape province.

Williams likes to put himself in the shoes of collectors such as James Henry Bowker, a British colonel who in the 1860s was the first and last person to see the Bashee River buff, capturing three females, which he promptly pinned to a board and sent on to Cape Town.

Williams gets a faraway look in his eye at the thought of becoming the second person ever to lay eyes on the Bashee River buff, and perhaps the first to capture a male.

One of Bowker's specimens remains mounted in the South African Museum in Cape Town, the other two in British museums.

State Splendor and Public Poverty: From Rome to Washington

On a recent trip to Rome we spent an entire afternoon walking around the Roman Colosseum and the Roman Forum. As we trekked around the 2,000-year-old ruins that once were the epicenter of western civilization, my economic mind began to wonder. Among the rubble lining famous roads like the Via Nova laid the remains of grand government buildings, temples, and a sports arena. The Forum also served as a parade ground where military units marched in victory celebrations. It then dawned on me that the sights we marveled at and snapped family pictures in front of represented government spending.

I thought about the amount of labor, materials, and tools expended to build the wishes of government. And how did the average Roman citizen benefit from these massive public works projects? I imagined an ancient Keynesius etching a formula like C+I+G+X=Y in stone showing the increase in economic growth in Roman coinage terms resulting from the construction of the Atrium Vestae.

Flash forward to the present, when economists, financial pundits, and central bankers fret over sequestration and austerity. After all, according to the Inscriptions of Keynesius, decreases in government spending lead to less economic growth. Lost in all the formulas and theory are two questions: what is economic growth and why is it important?

Contemporary mainstream economists would say economic growth is when GDP increases, which promotes job creation. In contrast, the classical/Austrian argument begins by noting that the purpose of any economic activity is to satisfy human wants. Society experiences economic growth when an increasing number of wants are satisfied. This occurs when the factors of production, land, labor, and capital (not money) become more efficient, and thus, lowering the opportunity costs for producing goods and services. Resources are then freed up to satisfy additional wants.

In class, I use the example of digging out a backyard swimming pool by hand. I ask the students how many people would be required to finish the hole in a day. I then introduce shovels into the scenario and repeat the question. Finally, I bring a backhoe into the picture along with the question of what we do with the excess labor and shovels. The answer becomes obvious to an individual sitting in an economics principles course; they make other goods. The same amount of resources can now satisfy more wants.

The problem with the modern terminology for economic growth is that it fails to take into account that every percentage increase of government spending requires hordes of bureaucrats sitting at a desk behind a keyboard inside a building constructed on a parcel of land, and that all this land, labor, and capital could have otherwise been used to satisfy consumer wants.

According to the Census Bureau, the federal government employed 2.8 million individuals in 2011. Another 19.2 million people worked for state and local governments. And what do these 22 million produce? Nothing but stacks of forms and regulations governing almost every aspect of our lives. A quick trip to your local government building will verify this fact.

An additional 1.4 million wake up in the morning donning one of the uniforms associated with the US military. People in the armed forces not only produce zero for human consumption, they actually destroy the land, labor, and capital necessary for the creation of goods and services that help satisfy human wants.

Furthermore, the productive sector must hire legions of workers to fill out paperwork that the non-producing bureaucrats require businesses to answer. Firms have entire floors of people that do nothing all day but reply to the demands of non-producing paper-pushers sitting in government buildings.

The American Action Forum estimates that businesses waste 87 million man-hours per year complying with regulations. Consider that Ford workers can assemble an automobile in around 33 man-hours, and that it takes approximately 3 man-hours to grow 100 bushels of corn. In terms of labor alone, government costs us 2.6 million cars or countless baskets of food, added on to the other products that could have been built if the labor sitting in government offices were employed in a productive capacity.

As for land, The Daily Paul estimates that the federal government alone owns 30 percent of the land in the United States upon which sit military bases, government buildings, national parks and areas where human activity is banned. Though estimates for state and local government property ownership are less reliable, one can easily imagine the percentage to be at least a third of that controlled by the federal government, which means government at every level controls at minimum 40 percent of the land mass in the country.

Just like the Roman gazing at the wonder of the Colosseum during the times of Emperor Vespasian, citizens in countries around the world stare in awe at government buildings, the residences of presidents and monarchs, and monuments commemorating some national event or paying homage to a political figure. The building material, wiring, flooring, and equipment used for construction could have been used to make a good to satisfy the wants of the average person. We post pictures to Facebook pages showing us standing before grandiose government buildings, but we never see the other side of the coin: someone doing without, because the resources that could have served his needs were embedded in a tribute to state arrogance.

Politicians and central bankers say the cure for our current economic conditions is vibrant economic growth. But how can you have economic growth when a good portion of our labor, land, and capital is tied to endeavors that produce nothing? The average Roman citizen 2,000 years ago would probably nod in agreement.

Japan's Diamond Electric to pay RM59mil for price fixing

WASHINGTON: Japan's Diamond Electric Manufacturing Co Ltd has agreed to plead guilty and pay a US$19mil (RM59mil) fine for a conspiracy to fix prices of ignition coils sold to Ford Motor Co and other companies, the US Justice Department said on Tuesday.

Diamond is the 10th autoparts maker to agree to plead guilty in the Justice Department's long-running investigation into price-fixing in the industry.

Separately, an executive with Sweden's Autoliv Inc , Takayoshi Matsunaga, agreed to plead guilty in connection with a conspiracy to fix the prices of seat belts sold to Toyota Motor Corp, the Justice Department said.

In return, he will serve one year and a day and pay US$20,000 (RM62,000) in fines.

Matsunaga, who pleaded guilty to a single felony, is the 15th executive to acknowledge breaking the law as part of the probe.

Diamond Electric, which will cooperate with the Justice Department, agreed to plead guilty to a single felony charges of fixing the prices of ignition coils sold to Ford, Toyota Motor Corp and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, the Justice Department said.

The department said the price fixing conspiracy ran from at least July 2003 to at least February 2010. Diamond Electric said in a statement that it apologised, and had created a compliance program to ensure there would be no repeat of the price-fixing.

"Through the compliance program and strict new policies relating to pricing activities, Diamond Electric is committed to competing aggressively in a free and open ignition coils market around the world," the company said.

The nine auto parts makers that have already pleaded guilty are: Tokai Rika, Autoliv, TRW Deutschland Holding GmbH, Nippon Seiki Co Ltd, Fujikura Ltd, Furukawa Electric Co Ltd, Denso Corp, Yazaki Corp and G.S. Electech.

California Supreme Court refuses to stop gay weddings

A same-sex couple weds at City Hall in San Francisco, June 29, 2013. (Stephen Lam)

The California Supreme Court on Monday rejected the latest bid to stop gay weddings in the state as same-sex marriage opponents tried to salvage a voter-approved ban on the nuptials.

In 2008 California voters passed the gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, but a San Francisco federal judge struck down the initiative as unconstitutional and last month the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that supporters of the ban did not have the legal right to appeal.

In the aftermath of that highly anticipated opinion, Prop 8 supporters turned to the California Supreme Court last week and asked it to order an immediate halt on gay weddings in the state, until the state high court could rule on whether the original federal order applied across California.

The California Supreme Court rejected that request, but further briefs on the legal issues are due in the coming weeks.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris said in a statement that her office "will continue to fight this effort to deny same-sex couples their constitutionally-protected civil rights."

Two days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June, a federal appeals court allowed gay marriages to resume in California and a wave of ceremonies began immediately.

Austin Nimocks, an attorney representing the pro-Prop 8 group Protectmarriage.com, said in a statement that it hopes the California Supreme Court will ultimately side with it.

"Although we would have preferred for the California Supreme Court to issue a stay so that the state's marriage amendment would be respected sooner rather than later," Nimocks said, "the proponents of Proposition 8 will continue to urge the court to uphold the rule of law."

Same-sex marriage is allowed in 13 states and Washington D.C., and gay rights advocates believe momentum is on their side to extend it further.

In court papers filed last week, Protectmarriage.com argued that the California federal judge's ruling did not apply statewide. It asked the California Supreme Court to immediately tell county clerks that Prop. 8 remained in effect and order them to stop issuing wedding licenses while the issue is litigated.

The State of California opposed the move and on Monday the California Supreme Court rejected the request in a one sentence order.

The case in the California Supreme Court is Dennis Hollingsworth vs. Patrick O'Connell et al., S211990.
