New research advances development of universal flu vaccine

A new approach for immunizing against influenza elicited a more potent immune response and broader protection than the currently licensed seasonal influenza vaccines when tested in mice and ferrets. The vaccine concept, which was developed by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), represents an important step forward in the quest to develop a universal influenza vaccineone that would protect against most or all influenza strains without the need for an annual vaccination.

The scientists designed an experimental vaccine featuring the protein ferritin, which can self-assemble into microscopic pieces called nanoparticles, as a key component. Ferritin was fused genetically with hemagglutinin (HA), the protein found on the surface of the influenza virus, resulting in a nanoparticle with eight protruding viral spikes. Using this as the basis for the vaccine antigen, the researchers created an experimental vaccine using HA from a 1999 strain of H1N1 influenza virus and evaluated its ability to stimulate an immune response in mice. A single dose of the experimental vaccine both with and without the use of an adjuvant triggered an immune response in the mice comparable to two doses of the currently licensed seasonal influenza vaccine. The experimental vaccine was also active against a wider range of H1N1 influenza virus strains than the licensed vaccine.

The researchers also tested the experimental vaccine's ability to protect ferrets from infection with a 2007 strain of H1N1 influenza virus a strain it had not been specifically designed to prevent. One day after exposure to the virus, ferrets that had received the experimental vaccine had significantly lower influenza virus levels than those that were not immunized. According to the study authors, the novel vaccine concept works by stimulating antibodies that hitch themselves to the parts of the influenza virus that stay consistent across different strains. Although further testing is needed, the HA-ferritin nanoparticle approach shows promise for development of more broadly protective vaccines for influenza as well as for other infectious diseases, the authors note.

Ray Manzarek, the legendary keyboardist who founded The Doors in 1965 with fellow UCLA film school alum Jim Morrison, died of cancer Monday at age 74. Manzarek had fought a long battle with bile duct cancer.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said in a statement. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

His intricate keyboard playing on songs such as "Light My Fire" made Manzarek a rock legend, and he forever held close the memory of his friend Morrison, defending the singer as a poet, not an out-of-control alcoholic as he was sometimes later portrayed.

"What great company he was," Manzarek told the London Times about Morrison, who died in 1971. "Talk about going to the pub and having a couple of beers with the guy -- Morrison was perfect. He's been haunting me for some 40 years now, and I miss him every day."

The Doors sold more than 100 million albums, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. "The impact of their meteoric career has resonated far beyond their brief half-decade as a recording and performing entity," the Rock Hall's statement read upon their induction. "Their words and music captured the Sixties zeitgeist with undeniable power."

In addition to "Light My Fire," the band's hits included "L.A. Woman," "People Are Strange," "The End," "Break On Through to the Other Side" and "Hello, I Love You."

Manzarek, a Chicago native, already knew Morrison from UCLA film school when the two famously met on California's Venice Beach in 1965. Morrison reportedly sang some of his original songs to Manzarek, who responded by saying, "Jim, those are the best songs I?ve ever heard... Man, we?ve got to get a band together. We?re going to make a million dollars!?

After Morrison's death in 1971, the band continued to ride waves of fame and a seemingly eternal fascination with the late lead singer. Not all of the revivals were band-approved: In 1991, Kyle MacLachlan portrayed Manzarek and Val Kilmer played Morrison in the controversial Oliver Stone-directed feature film, "The Doors." Manzarek and other members of The Doors famously disliked the Stone film, especially for its portrayal of Morrison as a wild man and heavy drinker. In 2009, when promoting a documentary about the band, "When You're Strange," Manzarek told Billboard magazine the documentary would be " the anti-Oliver Stone."

In 2002, Manzarek and Doors guitarist Robby Krieger formed the Doors of the 21st Century with Cult frontman Ian Astbury. But drummer John Densmore sued over the use of the band name, launching an ugly six-year feud. Manzarek and Krieger performed under other names, eventually settling on Manzarek-Krieger.

Manzarek also produced "Los Angeles," the first LP from iconic punk rock band X, in 1980, and worked with other bands, including Echo & The Bunnymen.

In 1998, he published his autobiography, "Light My Fire: My Life With The Doors." He also wrote two novels, including one, "The Poet in Exile," that explores the urban legend that Morrison never really died. The book's narrator, Roy, is a thinly veiled version of Manzarek himself.

In 2011, Manzarek told M Music & Musicians magazine that he was enjoying a quiet lifestyle. "Meanwhile I?m living up in the Napa Valley, enjoying the gentleman farmer?s life," he said. "My wife and I go to bed early and get up at 6. Who would have imagined going from a rocker to a farmer? It?s a great life."

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, daughter-in-law Sharmin and grandchildren Noah, Apollo and Camille. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, fans make a donation in Manzarek's name to the cancer-research organization Stand Up to Cancer.

Music fans and fellow musicians were quick to remember Manzarek. The official Twitter account for the late rocker Ronnie James Dio tweeted, "Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and fans of Ray Manzarek from @TheDoors who passed away today. You are now with Jim and Ronnie!"

Telerehabilitation allows accurate assessment of patients with low back pain

May 20, 2013 ? A new "telerehabilitation" approach lets physical therapists assess patients with low back pain (LBP) over the Internet, with good accuracy compared with face-to-face examinations, reports a study in the May 15 issue of Spine.

Taking advantage of Skype and other widely-used services may make telerehabilitation a more feasible alternative to in-person clinic visits, according to the new research by Prof. Manuel Arroyo-Morales and colleagues of University of Granada, Spain. They believe their results "give preliminary support to the implementation of web-based LBP assessment systems using video recordings that can be evaluated by different therapists."

Can Back Pain Assessments Be Performed Over the Internet?

The researchers designed and evaluated a web-based telerehabilitation system for performing routine clinical assessments of patients with LBP. The telerehabilitation setup operated across a low-bandwidth Internet connection between two personal computers equipped with webcams.

The system included the popular Skype videoconferencing service, allowing the patient and physical therapist could see and talk to each other in real time. The therapist guided the patient in performing specific movements, and captured video clips for analysis using video motion analysis software (Kinovea). The therapist and patient were also able to complete standard back pain questionnaires using the web-based system.

Fifteen patients with chronic LBP underwent two assessments in random order: once face-to-face and once using the telerehabilitation setup. Accuracy was assessed by comparing the results of telerehabilitation assessment with those of in-person assessment.

The results showed good agreement between the two evaluations, supporting the use of telerehabilitation for clinical assessment of LBP. There was good correlation for measures made on video motion analysis, such as spine mobility and back muscle endurance; as well as questionnaire-based assessments such as disability, pain, and health-related quality of life.

Skype and Other Tools Make Telerehabilitation More Feasible

The telerehabilitation setup showed consistent results for the same therapist at different times (intra-rater reliability) as well as for assessment by independent therapists (inter-rater reliability).

There is growing interest in Internet-based systems for assessment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Telerehabilitation approaches could be especially valuable for patient in rural or remote areas, who don't have easy access to healthcare providers.

In the past, the use of telerehabilitation was limited by high equipment costs. The new study shows the successful use of telerehabilitation using widely available and familiar technology, including the use of free software such as Skype.

The telerehabilitation system evaluated in the new study may be useful in assessing patients with the very common problem of LBP, showing good agreement with the results of face-to-face assessment. However, there are still some factors limiting more widespread use -- including the need for "potentially unwieldy" security software to protect patient privacy.

Prof. Arroyo-Morales and coauthors also note that many patients who would otherwise have been eligible for the study weren't included because of a lack of familiarity and experience with computers. The researchers call for further studies in larger groups of patients -- focusing on those who don't have easy access to in-person evaluations.

'Britain's Obama' urges ties with West Africa

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? A rising star in Britain's Labour Party, described by some as the "British Barack Obama," Chuka Umunna urged the United Kingdom to more aggressively forge ties with West Africa's fast-growing economies.

During a trade mission to West Africa last week that included a stop in his father's home country Nigeria, Umunna, a member of the British Parliament, dismissed the comparison to the United States president.

"Let's not beat around the bush. The reason why people make the comparison is, frankly, there are not that many black people in Western politics," said Umunna, who represents the London district of Streatham and is Labour's shadow business secretary. "And I'd love to have a situation where you can be elected as a black politician without constantly having comparisons made."

Umunna, 34, grew up in Streatham and worked as a lawyer before being elected to parliament in 2010. The son of an Irish mother and Nigerian father, he said he made seven or eight trips to Nigeria "for pretty long stays" during his childhood. But prior to last week's visit, he hadn't been to the country since his father's funeral in 1992.

Umunna said that while West Africa's high growth rate is well-known, he was struck by just how different Nigeria seemed today compared to his last visit, which occurred during a time of military rule.

"It didn't have the feeling of a country that was going anywhere in 1992," he said. But today Nigeria "does have the feeling of a country on the up. What you find physically and you see on the street matches up with a growth rate of 7 percent, which it is forecast to have this year."

He had similar things to say about Ghana, where at a reception Thursday night hosted by the British High Commission in Accra he said Britain was eager to help develop infrastructure and remove other barriers to economic growth.

"We are acutely conscious that we come here with some humility," he said in brief remarks. "This is clearly an economy that is taking off, and we know that between 2011 and 2015 Ghana is forecast to be the eighth-fastest growing economy in the world. And of course that is at the same time that our economy in the U.K. has been struggling to grow somewhat."

In an interview with The Associated Press, Umunna acknowledged there was a feeling in its former colonies that Britain has been less engaged than other partners such as China, Brazil and India.

"I think it's fair to say that there is a perception that we've been a bit complacent and because of our historical ties have felt somehow that we don't need to put as much effort in," he said. "I want to be very clear and send out a very strong message to policymakers and business communities in all of the West African countries that the U.K. wants to do business."

Back home, Umunna said he was focused on helping put the Labour Party back into power in the 2015 elections under party leader Ed Miliband ? something he said the party was in a good position to accomplish.

Umunna said he left the law for politics "to achieve massive positive change" and that he was frustrated being in the opposition.

Though widely regarded as an up and coming force in the Labour Party, Umunna has received some recent negative press related to his online footprint. Last month Britain's Daily Mail reported that on an invitation-only social networking website, Umunna complained in 2006 that clubs in London's West End "seem to be full of trash and C-list wannabes, while other places that should know better opt for the cheesy vibe." The paper said the comments undercut the lawmaker's "man of the people" image.

Umunna has also been criticized in the press for editing his own Wikipedia page to include references to "the U.K.'s Barack Obama," something his office has said he has no recollection of doing. Prime Minister David Cameron made light of the story on May 8 in the House of Commons, saying, "Now he has been famously comparing himself to Barack Obama. As he would put it, can we change our Wikipedia entry? Yes we can." In BBC footage of the remarks, Umunna rolls his eyes in response.

"With respect to the nightclub comment I've never claimed to be a saint," Umunna told AP. "My generation, we're probably the first generation to actually have grown up online and to have social media accounts . We all say stupid things in our younger years and I'm no different from anyone else, and I regret what I said and I can't really say more than that."

He declined to be specific when discussing his political ambitions. "I'm not particularly interested in positions and in my own personal position in as much as I am ambitious to actually do things and make a difference," he said. "I'm ambitious in my politics and the kind of society I'd like us to build."

Greece faces slow, jobless recovery next year

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's deep, six-year recession is likely to end in 2014, but growth will be weak and unemployment will remain above 20 percent for another three years, the country's international debt inspectors said.

The European Commission issued the gloomy predictions Friday in a 237-page assessment of Greece's bailout agreement, as the country formally received its latest emergency loan payout, worth 4.2 billion euros ($5.4 billion).

The report cited progress by Greece's year-old coalition government in reforming the economy and public finances, but warned against complacency.

"The implementation of wide-ranging structural reforms remains the prerequisite for stabilizing the economy and laying the foundations for economic growth ... Further efforts are needed."

Greece has been dependent on rescue loans from euro partners and the International Monetary Fund since it got locked out of international bond markets in 2010. So far it has received some 200 billion euros ($257 billion), pledging in return to overhaul its economy.

While the government has said it aims to resume borrowing from bond markets in early 2014, a European Union official involved in the Greek bailout said Friday that Athens was only likely to regain "partial market access, possibly next year."

The official did not elaborate and asked not to be named due to his direct involvement in confidential negotiations with Greece.

Stringent budget austerity measures ? including relentless pay and benefit cuts ? have slashed high deficits but also hurt economic growth. Unemployment has reached 27 percent, with a staggering 64 percent of those aged 15-24 are without a job.

The Commission estimates that Greece's economy, after contracting 4.2 percent in 2013, will next year grow for the first time since 2008, by 0.6 percent. It warned, however, the recovery remains fragile.

"Should product and services market reforms not accelerate as foreseen under the program, positive economic growth could not return in 2014 as foreseen," it said in its report, which was based on data by representatives of Greece's debt inspectors ? the Commission, IMF and European Central bank.

"A failure to implement these reforms in time would thus amplify the social distress coming from very high unemployment and from the pressure exerted on the population by the prolonged recession and the wide-ranging economic and social adjustment."

The jobless rate is projected to peak at 27 percent this year before dropping gradually to 26 percent in 2014 and 21 percent in 2016, the report showed.

While stressing that progress had been made and public finances were improving, the Commission said more must be done to improve Greece's tax collection system and shrink its still oversized public sector.

A survey published Friday by private broadcaster Skai television found 29 percent of Greeks believed the country's financial crisis would last another six to 10 years. Another 27 percent think it will last more than another 10 years.

The Public Issue poll of 1,031 people conducted May 10-15 also found a slight rise in support for the extreme right Golden Dawn party, at 11.5 percent.

I am writing a program for my programming class and I seem to be having trouble with making sure the cells come to life correctly I think the issue is in my neighbor If statements but cant seem to find it. Here are the instructions my code and the text file

The game of life is a computer simulation of the life and death events of a population of organisms. This program will determine the life, death, and survival of bacteria from one generation to the next, assuming the starting grid of bacteria is generation zero (0). Each cell has a total of up to 8 neighbors, including the 4 immediately adjacent cells and the 4 diagonal cells. The rules for the creation of each cell in the next generation are as follows:

If the cell is currently empty:
If the cell has exactly three living neighbors, it will come to life in the next generation.
If the cell has any other number of living neighbors, it will remain empty.
If the cell is currently living:
If the cell has one or zero living neighbors, it will die of loneliness in the next generation.
If the cell has four or more living neighbors, it will die of overcrowding in the next generation.
If the cell has two or three neighbors, it will remain living.
All births and deaths occur simultaneously (make sure you don't get this one wrong!).

 #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <iomanip> using namespace std;  const int SIZE = 20;   void initGrid(bool life[][SIZE],bool life2[][SIZE]); void readGrid(bool life[][SIZE], bool life2[][SIZE]); void printGrid(bool life[][SIZE]); int livecellNeighbors (bool life[][SIZE],int,int); int deadcellNeighbors (bool life [][SIZE],int,int); void determineNextGen(bool life[][SIZE], bool life2 [][SIZE]);   int main() {     bool life[SIZE][SIZE];     bool life2[SIZE][SIZE];      readGrid(life,life2);     int neighbors;     int neighbors2;     for (int count = 0; count < 1; count++)         {             determineNextGen(life, life2);          }      printGrid(life);     printGrid(life2);     return 0; }   /*-------------------------------------------------------             readGrid (and related functions)  ---------------------------------------------------------*/  void readGrid(bool life[][SIZE], bool life2[][SIZE]) {     ifstream infile("bacteria.txt");     Hi,

Well the first errors are on lines 100 and 139

    line 100 if(life[row][col]== true && life[row+1][col]==true & row+1<20)//bottom

This should be && shouldn't it

    line 139 is the same...

you have variables that you dont use as well.

    Regards

    Snoopy.

so i switched to for loops but I am not sure how to check the edge cells here is my new neighbor count code

 int livecellNeighbors (bool life[SIZE][SIZE],int row,int col) {     int neighbors=0;          if (life[row][col]==true)         {            for (int i=-1; row+i<=row+1; i++)          {              for (int c=-1;col+c<=col+1;c++)              {                  if (i==0 && c==0)                  {                   }                   else if (life[row+i][col+c]==true)                     neighbors++;                  }              }         }      return neighbors; }

Bulger girlfriend: Why she's still getting 8 years in jail

Bulger girlfriend, Catherine Greig, lost her appeal to reduce her 8-year prison sentence. Greig was alleged gangster James "Whitey" Bulger's girlfriend during his 16 years as a fugitive.

A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Friday that it found no basis to change the sentence that Catherine Greig received after she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. The panel included retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

Bulger, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, fled Boston in late 1994 and remained a fugitive until he and Greig were captured together in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.

Prosecutors say Greig helped Bulger in multiple ways while he was hiding from law enforcement.

Bulger, 83, is scheduled to go on trial in June on charges that he participated in 19 murders.

Greig's appellate attorney, Dana Curhan, had argued that the sentencing judge "effectively tripled" the appropriate sentence for Grieg. He said Judge Douglas Woodlock gave her too much time on the fugitive-harboring charge and wrongly imposed sentencing enhancements related to firearms and obstruction of justice. In court documents, Curhan also argued that five victims of Bulger's alleged crimes should not have been allowed to testify during her sentencing hearing.

"We disagree with it, but the court has spoken and we are going to review our options," Curhan said Friday.

Options include asking for a hearing before the full court or asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

In its written ruling, the appeals court agreed with Woodlock, who found that Greig's conduct was not limited to mere harboring.

"He also noted that Greig provided Bulger with 'a variety of things,' over and above mere shelter," Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson wrote for the court. "The judge referenced the length of the pair's time on the run, the heinous nature of the crimes Bulger is accused of committing, Greig's capacity to make her own choices, and the fact that a less serious sentence would promote disrespect for the law."

Thompson wrote that the record "provides a good deal of support" for the judge's sentencing calculations.

The appeals court also noted that Greig traveled across the country with Bulger for a long period of time, used false identities, helped Bulger perpetuate his aliases and settled with him in California, where she paid the bills, helped him get medical treatment and prescription medications, and maintained their home.

"Her handling of these tasks undoubtedly helped Bulger keep his public outings to a minimum, thus reducing his risk of detention," the court said.

Greig's former lawyer, Kevin Reddington, had asked for a sentence of a little over two years. Reddington said she had fallen in love with a "Robin Hood-like" figure and never believed in the years she helped hide him that Bulger was a murderer.

"We are pleased with the Court's decision and that Catherine Greig will be held accountable for her conduct," U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said in a statement.

    EA to ditch online passes

The upcoming Battlefield 4 will not require an online pass to access multiplayer, unlike its predecessor.

EA is dropping online passes on its new titles following feedback from its players.

Talking to VentureBeat, EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg confirmed that no new titles from EA will feature an online pass requirement to access online functionality.

'Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn't respond to the format,' said Reseburg, speaking to VentureBeat. 'We've listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.'

The player response cited is curious as at the time of the program's launch in 2010, EA reported that there was no 'significant pushback from the user' in a statement regarding the company's commitment to the program.

Reseburg was specifically talking about the upcoming Battlefield 4 and the online pass is not being discontinued on titles that already require them, only not implemented on future titles.

Games that currently use the online pass include Battlefield 3 and most of the entries in the EA Sports catalogue and there are no reported plans to phase these out at this time.

The move does not necessarily mean that EA is backing away from developing online features with Reseburg commenting that the company will still be committed to creating content and services that make players want to keep playing a title beyond its initial play through.

Judging by the success that EA often trumpets with regards to The Simpsons: Tapped Out, there's a possibility that this continued content creation could take the form of micro-transactions for its more traditional triple A titles, something that the company has experimented with before on Dead Space 3.

    Online Pass
Online passes are an attempt to fight the second hand game market. As accessing online features requires this one-use activation code, if a second hand title is sold without an un-used code then a replacement can then be bought from the publisher directly, ensuring a revenue stream from used games. Other publishers including Activision and Ubisoft also use online passes.

7 Egyptian security personnel abducted in Sinai

CAIRO (AP) ? Suspected militants in Egypt's Sinai abducted seven security personnel as they headed to Cairo for holidays early Thursday, security officials said. It was the first such kidnapping of security forces in the lawless peninsula.

The officials said masked gunmen ambushed two taxis at gunpoint outside the city of el-Arish, the capital of North Sinai governorate, fleeing with five policemen and one border guard captive. None of those abducted were in uniform, officials said.

Four of the policemen work in the Rafah border terminal leading to the Gaza Strip, and one was in a riot police unit deployed in Sinai. The border guard was a member of the military. The taxi drivers reported that a seventh member of the security forces was also kidnapped, but authorities said they are still trying to identify him.

Security in the Sinai has deteriorated sharply in the two years since the overthrow of longtime authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak, as it has elsewhere across the country A surge in crime as well as clashes between Islamist backers of President Mohammed Morsi and his opponents have combined with economic woes to feed the sense of insecurity.

A new poll released by the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Projects said only 30 percent of Egyptians polled see the country on the right track, compared to 53 percent surveyed in 2012, and 65 percent in 2011.

"Today's level of satisfaction is comparable to the level observed in spring 2010," almost a year before the uprising, the Center's report said.

In the poll, 44 percent of Egyptians surveyed say law and order in the country was getting worse. Conducted in March, the poll describes a divided nation, with 53 percent viewing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi favorably, and only 46 percent expressing confidence that upcoming elections would be fair.

Morsi's opponents are planning rallies Friday in which they demand that he step down and that early presidential elections be held.

The poll surveyed 1,000 Egyptians with a 4.3 percent margin of error.

The abduction in the Sinai is the latest incident to highlight the rise of Islamist militant groups there. Along with Bedouin tribal gangs involved in smuggling and other criminal activity, they have taken advantage of the security vacuum there to step up attacks on police stations, security convoys and other targets.

Security officials say Thursday's kidnapping was carried out by militant groups known to the authorities who are hiding in North Sinai's rugged mountains. Two officials said the kidnapping came after the mother of an imprisoned militant claimed that her son was tortured in detention, causing his eyesight to fail. The imprisoned militant is sentenced to death for attacking a police station in the early days after Mubarak's ouster.

The officials said authorities were sending the family to visit their son in prison again and provide him with necessary medical attention in a bid to defuse anger over his treatment, and secure the safety of the captive security personnel.

They said contact was established with the kidnappers, adding that representatives of the presidency and the military are reaching out to militants and mediators to secure the hostages' release. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the new instructions with the media. Egypt's state news agency MENA reported that negotiations with the kidnappers were underway through mediators, but also didn't elaborate.

In a statement, Morsi pledged to continue efforts to secure the release of the captives, calling for the "protection of the lives" of both the "abducted and the kidnappers." He said that the solutions to Sinai's problems should not be through "abductions and terrorizing citizens."

Local tribes accuse the central government of discrimination, neglect, and police brutality. Tribal Bedouins have briefly kidnapped foreigners to use them as bargaining chips with authorities, urging them to release imprisoned relatives.

The security officials said forces in the Sinai were on high alert, particularly along the border with the Gaza Strip. Movement was restricted for the multinational forces stationed in Sinai since the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was signed in 1979, the officials added.

Egypt's military has carried out sweeps in the peninsula since a militant attack against its troops that left 16 soldiers killed in August 2012. It was the most brazen militant assault on Egyptian troops in modern history. Still, the attackers have not been apprehended or publicly identified.

The volatile northern Sinai borders Hamas-ruled Gaza as well as Israel. Weapons flowed into the peninsula from Libya to the area, adding to the security challenge.

Morsi had pledged to restore security to the peninsula. Officials from the presidency at one point negotiated with locals to ease off on the crackdown and the pursuit of fugitives. In exchange, locals were to refrain from attacks on authorities or cross-border raids on Israel.

The U.S. has repeatedly discussed the situation in Sinai with Egyptian authorities and offered security and border control advice.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Hesham Kandil was quoted by MENA as saying that investigation into the killing of the 16 soldiers is still ongoing. "Egypt is cooperating fully with neighboring countries to combat terrorism," he said.

Short Film and Being a Renaissance Man - blog

I'm thinking about short film lately, because A.) I just read an awesome screenplay written by my boy Ted Kluck, which is in pre-production and will likely star an actor of considerable note, and B.) I just watched a short film called ...Forgotten Detroit, which I helped (at the lowest level) to Kickstart about a year and a half ago. So, here's specifically what I'm thinking about in terms of short films: their resurgence is one of the many blessings brought to us by the omnipresence of the interwebs and the ease-of-access that we now have to video in a variety of formats. I mean, think about it: all other things being equal, there ought naturally to be at least as many short films as there are features. Because, just as short stories and novels are related-but-unique literary forms, a lot of stories that demand to be told in an audio-visual format would suffer greatly if someone tried to stretch them out to an hour and a half or two hours. (Heck, half the 2-minute movie trailers I encounter today seem like the trailer is a more fitting length and format for telling the story than the full movie).

But, whereas there have pretty much always been periodicals, anthologies, etc. (not to mention early digital forms like BBS's and dial-up connections) as means of getting one's short stories into the waiting hands of consumers, it's taken the very recent proliferation of high-speed Internet to give any real distribution oomph to short films, because let's face it, with few exceptions (Rob Bell's Nooma videos, for example), most people aren't going to shell out enough money for a fifteen-minute film to turn a profit after all the expense involved in producing it. Even in the aughties, the majority of the short films I saw were all at one film festival, all in one day. Now they can be distributed with ease.

This, I think, is a really good thing for people who love (both making and watching) film.

As to ...Forgotten Detroit itself, it's a very solid 17? minutes of artistic and introspective entertainment. It's making the festival circuit, so you can't buy a copy at the moment (we Kickstarters each got a DVD by way of thanks), but check out this guy's bio on his website: http://rickboven.com.? That's right, he's a filmmaker, an actor, an indie comic book artist (I've got several of his comics on my Kindle and some day I'm going to commission him to give 42 Months Dry the graphic novel treatment), an author, and apparently dabbles in music as well. Until recently, he also ran a small press out of Chicago, not unlike our Gut Check Press.

What's that like, I wonder? Having that many creative outlets and being talented in all of them? Here's the funny thing: it sounds just exhausting to me. I think I'd feel a kind of creative paralysis that would sap me of all energy and keep me from really exploring any of them fully. I love to try and multitask, but once more than two options appear, I suck at getting things done.

This leads me, much like PBS's illustrious Buddy the Tyrannosaurus (can you tell I have a five-year-old?), to a hypothesis: there are, creatively speaking, two different kinds of people...

    1. Those for whom each additional medium/outlet just fuels his or her creative potential and keeps the juices flowing. My wife is like this. She's a better writer than I am, and also a talented photographer, musician, painter, seamstress, designer of elaborate gardens, and dabbler in any number of mixed-medium artforms. And she's good at pretty much all of them and continually getting better.? I used to be a bit like this--or at least I thought I was. For a good decade (even while the actual writing and recording of music as a hobby became very rare) I sort of considered myself a creative musician in the back of my mind, and I've tried my hand at illustrating, graphic design, and comic book creation as well. . . but in recent years, I've had to come to terms with the fact that I'm one of...
    2. Those for whom each additional form of creative expression just divides his or her available creative energy, until there's not enough left in any given area to do anything. I pour a lot of this (creative energy) into my weekly sermon preparation. What remains, I find, must be rationed carefully. I'm not talking about time here or even energy per se, but limited creative resources.?
And so, even if I had the talent, skill, and time to tackle them all (I don't), the thought of making a film, painting a portrait, recording an album, and writing my next novel all at once, makes me just want to sit back and watch '90s sitcoms on Netflix instead. But when I think about one project by itself, I feel my creative energy and passion growing. By the way, my next novel is tentatively called The Outside Man and, along with Demoniac, it is a dime's width away from being contracted by a giant of a publisher (but more on that in a week or so).

So, what do you think; is my hypothesis right? And, if so, which of the two types are you? And have you shifted from one to the other during your life?
